The goal of this Western Tamang MTB-MLE programme is to help monolingual students coming from non-Nepali speaking communities to successfully integrate into the mainstream Nepali-medium education system and become confident learners. To achieve this goal, supplementary material production and teacher training play an important role to make the programme effective.
Representatives from the Western Tamang community participated in the material production and provided feedback during village checking. Majority of the teaching and learning materials produced are for the Kindergarten year as well as Western Tamang as a language subject from Kindergarten to early grades in primary. The project team also developed Grades 1-2 transitional materials and teaching aids to be used with the government textbooks for Grades 1-2 Nepali and English subjects to support students’ learning in these two language subjects, which they have limited to no exposure beyond the daily class period.
The programme conducts regular pre-service and in-service teacher training during the programme period. Teachers are taught the purposes and principles behind the programme design and child-centred teaching methodologies.
