The Rajbanshi Mother Tongue Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) programme is jointly developed and implemented by NNLPI and SIL International (Nepal) from 2010 to 2016. It is a six-year school programme, which includes one year of kindergarten followed by Grade 1 to Grade 5. The programme targets the Rajbanshi language community in Nepal and has three Rajbanshi MTB-MLE schools located in Amgachhi, Harira and Chilhara in Korobari and Khujurgachhi VDCs of Jhapa District, Nepal.
This programme uses a staggered progressive approach in the introduction of the three languages - mother tongue (L1) introduced in KG, Nepali (L2) introduced in G1 Term 2, and English (L3) introduced in G2 Term 2. The language of instruction (LoI) for other subjects also transits gradually from L1 to L2 over the six-school year period. During Grade 2 to 4 when bilingual MoI is used, teachers are given the flexibility to teach using L1 and L2 interchangeably based on their discretion of students' readiness.

The programme also emphasizes on child-centered and interactive learning instructional design and teaching methodology. Apart from kindergarten and Grade 1 where the project team developed their own curriculum and materials, the programme follows the government curriculum for all subjects from Grades 2 to 5. Supplementary learning materials and activities were developed for various subjects to make learning more interactive and to aid students' integration into the national education system.
