In 1999, a request was made to NNLPI for language development for the Sampang Rai people. During that time, very little was known in terms of multilingualism, language vitality and the attitude of the Sampang Rai people towards their language. Winter (1991) along with informal sources had reported that Sampang was a fast-dying language. The relationship between Sampang and other Rai language varieties was also uncertain. Further information about these issues was deemed necessary before it could be determined if language development work was feasible to undertake.
From 29th October until 21st November a team of two researchers and one guide travelled to the Sampang area in Khotang district of Nepal and conducted sociolinguistic research.
