The goal of this Western Tamang MTB-MLE programme is to help monolingual students coming from non-Nepali speaking communities to successfully integrate into the mainstream Nepali-medium education system and become confident learners. To achieve this goal, supplementary material production and teacher training play an important role to make the programme effective.
Representatives from the Western Tamang community participated in the material production and provided feedback during village checking. The majority of the teaching and learning materials produced are for Kindergarten as well as Western Tamang as a language subject from Kindergarten to Grade 3. The project team also developed teaching aids for Nepali and English to be used in conjunction with the government textbooks. These materials aim to support students’ learning in these two language subjects, in which they have limited to no exposure beyond the daily classes.
The programme conducts biannual teacher training, along with on-site support. Teachers are familiarised with the purpose and principles behind the programme design and are trained in child-centred teaching methodologies.
