Project Overview
NNLPI works with local language communities to provide opportunity to those who have not had opportunity before to learn to read and write. The goal is that by the end of a bilingual literacy programme, all the learners will be able to acquire basic literacy in both their mother tongue (MT) and Nepali, and their quality of life will be improved by becoming literate.
Programme Design
The adult bilingual literacy programme includes a 6-month mother tongue literacy class, MT reading fluency practice and a 3-month Nepali bridging class.
Materials Production & Training
NNLPI conducts writers workshops with assistance and participation from the local community to produce mother tongue primer, mother tongue supplementary reading materials and Nepali bridging primer for use during and after the literacy programme.
NNLPI also provides teacher training to the literacy class teachers before and during the programme. Literacy class teachers are recruited by the local community.
