Rajbanshi belongs to the Indo-Aryan language family. According to the census of Nepal (2001), the population is around 130,000. Most of this people group lives in the Jhapa, Morang and Sunsari districts. There are 3 dialects, Western, Eastern and Central.
The first orthography workshop was done in 2005 in cooperation with Rajbanshi community and the Central Department of Linguistics, Tribhuvan University. A tentative working orthography was drafted. After testing and two more orthography meeting, a working orthography was finalized in 2007.
